Statement of Faith

Basis of Faith of Belton-in-Rutland Baptist Trust (based on the original trust deed of 1848)

  1. There is one true and living God who exists in three eternal Persons; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

  2. God’s eternal and personal election of an innumerable host of people to eternal life.

  3. God has revealed himself in the Bible which consists of the Old and New Testaments alone.  These Scriptures are without error and are fully reliable in fact and doctrine.  They are the final authority and are fully sufficient for all matters of belief and practice.

  4. That Adam fell from his original righteousness into sin and brought upon himself and all his offspring death, condemnation and sinful nature.

  5. That God so loved lost sinners that he sent his Son into the world, conceived of the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit, fully God and fully man, born under the Law to live a perfect life and  to die at Calvary to effect propitiation and redemption for his elect people.

  6. The elect, who are called by grace, are justified in the sight of God on account of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ which is received by faith alone.

  7. The Holy Spirit convicts sinners, imparts spiritual life and gives a true understanding of the Scriptures.  He indwells all believers and produces increasing likeness to Christ in holiness of life.

  8. That such as are regenerated, called and justified shall persevere in holiness and enter into the joys of heaven.

  9. That the Ten Commandments are a permanent rule of life and conduct for all believers.

  10. That the local church is a congregation of believers who are committed to each other for the worship of God, the preaching of the Word, the administering of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, for pastoral care and discipline and for evangelism.

  11. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper have been given to the church by Christ as visible signs of the gospel.  Baptism is a symbol of the washing away of sin, union with Christ and entry into his church, but does not impart spiritual life.  The Lord’s Supper is a commemoration of Christ’s sacrifice offered once for all and involves no change in the bread and wine.  All its blessings are received by faith.

  12. That the Lord Jesus Christ shall come again.  He will raise the dead, both righteous and unrighteous and judge all people.  The righteous shall be glorified and enjoy everlasting life and the wicked shall endure everlasting punishment.
